Originally, CamScanner was removed from the Google Play Store after Kaspersky reported that it poses a threat to Android users — and in fact, it turned out to be a malicious app. You can read more about the report on Kaspersky’s blog post.
In response, CamScanner also made a statement that the advertising network (or technology) that they utilized was at fault and they had nothing to do with this. But, that doesn’t sound re-assuring.
Not just limited to that, the Indian government has also recently banned CamScanner in India. At the time of updating this article, it was still listed at the Play Store, but you may not notice it afterwards.
CamScanner isn’t just any random app — it has over 100 million downloads at the Play Store. So, I’ve had a lot of friends (and readers) asking about the alternatives to CamScanner. Surprisingly, I never utilized CamScanner for my work — I had another app installed to scan my documents. So, there must be alternatives to CamScanner, right?
Well, there might be easy alternatives, but are they safe to install?
In this article, we shall take a look at some of the best CamScanner alternatives available for Android.
CamScanner Alternatives That Are Safe To Install
Do note that there are tons of alternatives available. However, not all of them are safe to install. So, we hand-picked some of the best ones we’ve used as a document scanner app.
This would be my personal favorite. Evernote is a quality replacement for CamScanner. In addition to document scanning, you can add to-do lists, tasks, notes, and reminders. Not just extra features – but you get to backup the documents online (and be able to sync them across multiple devices). You can choose to utilize the free version (2-device limit) or upgrade your subscription to increase the device limit and the cloud storage space to store your documents/notes.
Unlike Evernote, Adobe Scan is tailored for document scanning only. It integrates OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology to accurately scan the text from your documents. It is a completely free CamScanner alternative to have installed on your Android device.
Yet another decent free CamScanner alternative is Microsoft’s Office Len PDF scanner. You can scan your documents and sync them up with OneNote or OneDrive cloud storage. I’d rather trust Microsoft with my privacy and security instead of CamScanner.
Scanbot is an impressive alternative to CamScanner. It is a feature-rich document scanner which also happens to be one of the Editor’s Choice at Google Play Store. It also supports OCR technology and offers some in-app purchases to upgrade as per your requirements. But, you can use it for free as well.
Primarily, it isn’t a document scanner – but if you want to store your documents as images, this would do the job. It will detect the edges of your documents and store it as pictures on Google Photos – so you don’t have to worry about backing up those.
Notebloc isn’t something I would recommend as my favorite. But, if nothing else works for you, this can be a good alternative – even though it contains in-app ads while you are using it for free. You can choose to upgrade in order to get rid of the ads.
I would not recommend installing anything else that’s not on this list, unless the above-mentioned apps do not work for you.
Which CamScanner alternative do you think is the best out there? If you were to choose one, which one would you install on your Android device?
