The Order: 1886 is a story-driven third person action adventure video game planned to be released on February 20, 2015. Developed by Ready at Dawn (makers of God of War series) and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, the game will be exclusively launched for PS4 consoles.
The storyline of The Order: 1886 is set in a fictionalized version of an ‘industrial era London’. Followed by a history of losing constant wars against chimeras (half man-half animal), human beings attempt to turn the odds for another time against thier enemies. With the development of new technologies like advanced weaponry, wireless communication, etc. the Knights, a group of highly skilled soldiers, take the responsibility of ensuring safety to citizens of the society against the threat posed by the chimeras.
The central character of the story is Grayson, a highly honoured Knight bearing the title of Sir Galahad, who is in the midst of a civil war between the lower class and the nobles of London. On his quest to stabilise the fragile society and the threat posed by the chimeras, he strives to find the truth of his existence.
Though there are many games similar to the genre of the game, Ready at Dawn has tried to revamp the aspects of the gameplay in many ways. When players have to melee, they are provided multiple split-second decisions to execute their opponent. e.g. They can use nearby objects to kill the enemy or they can stick to hand-to-hand combat.
The cover-based mechanic in the game has been emphasized a lot. It is far more realistic than any other game released so far. Players will have access to all sorts of advanced weaponry like miniguns, proximity mines, fragmentation grenades, etc. Also, there are a number of unique gadgets at your disposal. e.g. Monocular, a spy-glass, can be used to scout an area with the ability to send morse-codes to your airship, so that you can give-away your location.
- Although the technology in the game’s universe seems to be advanced, Ready at Dawn has designed the setting in such a way that the atmosphere, lifestyle of people and the architecture exactly matches with that of the industrial era London.
- According to the Creative Director, Ru Weerasuriya the historical setting of London along with an advanced technological era has been especially created to establish a unique approach to entertain gamers.
- Ready at Dawn has mainly focused on how to provide a cinematic experience to the players, so that they can involve themselves deeply with the story of Order: 1886 and hence can connect the side-stories of the characters involved.
