The new fitness band revealed by Microsoft, isn’t just an ordinary wearable fitness device but also the ideal smartwatch that you should be looking for. Available for Windows, iOS and Android devices…the Microsoft Band is the first cross-platform wearable device that definitely puts this gadget in the list of top contenders in the smartwatch business. Rather than discussing about the device in the beginning, let’s have a look on its specs:
- Screen: 1.4-inch color touchscreen
- Resolution: 320 x 106 pixel
- Sensors: Optical heart rate sensor, 3-axis accelerometer/gyro, GPS, Ambient light sensor and UV sensor
- Haptic vibration motor
- Bluetooth 4.0
- Compatability: Windows 8.1 or later, iOS 7.1 or later, Android 4.3 or later
- Battery: 2 X 100mAh rechargeable Lithium ion
These specs are common nowadays but when it comes to cross-platform usage, you can’t find any other wearable device in the market. The Microsoft band packs in the usual health and fitness applications along with smartphone notifications like calender events, messages, e-mail and phone calls.

The Windows phone users have an advantage though. The innovative assistant Cortana is available right away, to be directly used from the band. You can use voice commands to fulfill some of your needs like weather forecast, etc. On top of that, you can use your voice to reply text messages. The UI is pretty much like the ’tile’ system and looks decent. Yes, you may not find it comfortable to wear it, so I think it’s a better option to wear this device inside your wrist (the reverse way you would wear a watch).
You can track number of steps, estimate the amount of calories burned, monitor your heart rate and movements while sleeping (e.g. the device can tell the number of times you woke up during your sleep). When the band gets combined with the Microsoft Health app, you get to see the real power of this device as doing so, the Microsoft AI gets activated that shows you an in-depth analysis regarding your health and fitness activities. Not only you get to see the statistics, but also the app gives you useful advice like what and when to eat or sleep, the perfect time to go for jogging, etc. All your data gets uploaded to a cloud-based engine by the help of which you can compare your statistics with that of your friend.
With a price tag of $200, this gadget is very expensive but it offers that level of quality accordingly. You should definitely get it if you are a Windows phone user, as this is the only smartwatch as well as fitness band available for Windows platform.
