On one side where Elon Musk is spending billions to get people on Mars and on the other side, there are people who plan to minimize the effect of climate change.

Yes, technological advancements are necessary – but at the same time, we need to also work on how to reduce the impact on our environment so that we won’t have to talk about the “climate change”.

Well, of course, I’m now at my home (and not planting trees). How can I help too?

By helping organizations indirectly who work on making the Earth a better place?

Yes, correct.

And, that is the reason I decided to write about the search engine (Ecosia) when I came across it recently which claims that it plants trees when you start using their platform.

Is Ecosia Legit?

When I got to know about the search engine, I knew that I had to dig up more information on them to really know whether it is true or not.

In the process, I came across a great informative video that explains it all. I recommend you to watch the video below if you are curious.

How Does Ecosia Work?

Ecosia Works

If you’ve gone through the video, you probably know how it works. In either case, let me explain it to you:

Ecosia utilizes Microsoft’s Bing search engine as the base. So, privacy wise – it is a privacy-friendly search engine.

When you utilize their search engine, the advertisers who bid for Ad Spaces potentially pay more so that their advertisements will be visible to the users. Unlike Google, Ecosia does not include any trackers for the Ads displayed. You can check that for yourself by using the Privacy Badger extension for your browser.

So, with all that Ad revenue, they donate almost 45 percent of the revenue to the organizations which help them to plant trees.

Ecosia Stats

The more you use the search engine, the more the revenue. Hence, more trees planted. It’s that simple.

Concluding Thoughts

After reading about them, using their search engine, and doing a background check – I can definitely conclude that they are doing a wonderful job.

Of course, you might get the idea that it is a cash-grab project to make some money while helping the planet too. But, I don’t see anything shady here.

They utilize a Bing-powered search engine – which is decent enough and we get to help people who work on making this planet a beautiful place.

It all comes down to your opinion whether or not you want to consider using their search engine for the cause. It was my job to share it with you because I found it interesting.
