The Evil Within is out now!!! Along with its reviews. To save you the trouble of visiting various different sites and reading through mammoth sized reviews, we bring you the gist of what various reviewers have been saying about this game. The links to the full reviews have, of course, been provided.

The Evil Within is a horror survival game developed by Tango Gameworks, a Japan based company and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game came out on October 14th, 2014 on the PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and the PC.

Metro– 6/10

David Jenkins reviewed this game for Metro and he started off his review by stating matter-of-factly that Shinji Mikami, the developer behind The Evil Within and Resident Evil, is one of the best developers in the world. After covering a little info on Shinji Mikami, David got down to reviewing the game. He noted that there wasn’t enough effort put into the storytelling and that the protagonist lacked personality. He however praised the stealth and combat mechanics of the game. But he also kept stressing on the fact that The Evil Within felt more of a hybrid of previous Resident Evil games and Silent Hill. He also pointed out that the game fails to be scary enough; there were few real scares in the game. David praised the boss battles saying that they were very much fun but once again he stated that this fun was many times ruined by the restrictive camera of the player, especially in closed places. He concluded by saying that The Evil Within was a disappointment, as it had nothing new to bring to the table and the bugs, lack of story and the unhelpful camera didn’t help. Gameinformer– 9/10

Reviewed by Tim Turi, this review covers the same points that David Jenkins’s review did; but in a whole different light. While David highly stressed on how The Evil Within lacks story and character, Tim reassures fans that the weak story in no way affects the brilliance of the game. Tim highly praised the game mechanics; he praised the AI, the combat and the level design which hardly gave any resources to the player and made the player feel truly scared and anxious. Although he did acknowledge the fact that The Evil Within ‘has firm roots in Resident Evil’, he stated that it was for the good. The game was a true survival horror game according to him and all the stealth and combat systems of the game fell right in place. He wrapped up by saying that although The Evil Within fails to have a strong narrative or a strong protagonist, it highly succeeds in giving you the jumps and scares and the anxiety that a survival horror game should. You can check out the full review here.

Polygon– 6.5/10

Polygon’s review of The Evil Within was written by Philip Kollar. The intro to this review once again was pretty obvious as Philip started out by saying that although The Evil Within succeeded to be a by product of everything Resident Evil, it failed to be a game of 2014. He then stated that the plot was not interesting enough to pull him into the game and the protagonist, as mentioned by the above reviewers, lacked personality. Philip’s review seemed to focus mainly on the pacing issues of the game; the game had tension but was hardly regulated, as he put it. The chapters varied largely in location and moving from one chapter to another disturbed the pace of the game. He praised the combat but apparently there was too much of it; the game kept forcing too many enemies and too many boss battles in the face of the player that it reached a point where instead of being tensed and scared, the player felt annoyed. Philip stated that he enjoyed the quieter moments of the game where he could explore the environments. He appreciated how the game managed to maintain the tension by providing little ammo and how the scary environments really delivered. He ended his review by saying that although The Evil With has strong roots in Resident Evil, it fails to build on it. You can check out the full review here.

Other ratings were as follows:

Eurogamer: 8/10 (Review not in English)

GameTrailers: 9/10

Joystiq: 2.5 stars/5 stars

IGN: 8.7/10

So that’s what the fox says. Although The Evil Within fails to offer anything ground breakingly new and is a bit too deeply rooted in Resident Evil, it succeeds in being a survival horror game with its combat and stealth mechanics.
